Travelling: What Does It do for You?

Having been to various countries around the world, I could say that I am a well-travelled person in terms of experiencing different cultures, meeting a lot of people, and having to adapt to different setting from one country to another. Travelling might not always turn out as planned and you may experience inevitable setbacks along the way — lost luggage’s, spending more money then expected, delayed or missed flights, an upset stomach or a fever, even an unfortunate accident may occur. But one thing’s for sure. You will grow in every aspect as a person as you will bring along with you unforgettable memories and learnings no one can ever take away.

So, what does travelling really do for you? How does it contribute to your overall wellness? We’ve looked at Lysha Rohan’s 5 of the most life changing benefits travelling does to you. And we couldn’t help but agree! Here’s what we have to say too. Read on.

1.      You’ll appreciate other ways of life.

          My recent travel in the United States proved me that although we differ as to how we bask on life and living, may it be culturally, personally, or physically, I now have a deeper understanding that people are people no matter what. They live like this, they act like that, but at the end of the day you will see that we all share a common love for food, love for laughs, for family, and I think that’s when you’ll start understanding and appreciating more of people and life too, in general. Forget about the negativities you’ll hear from stereotypes, and when you travel and get to experience other races firsthand, you’ll realise that there’s more to love than hate. 

2.      You’ll become more resourceful.

          You’ll have to think outside the box. When travelling, you’ll realise that although there are a lot of other people touring around the country, there’s only one person you’ll have to trust yourself with, and that’s YOU! So, you need to follow your instincts, you need to understand your surroundings, be aware of who and what’s going on around you and if all else fails hope that you can assess google or google maps, it really is a saviour.  (haha!)  You even have to learn some of the language or at least try, in order to connect in a more meaningful way. Trying out different cuisines is a must and a challenge at the same time too as it’s part of the adjustment process, but just go with the flow, and you’ll realise that you’re slowly getting out of that comfort zone and this is all part of the process!

3.      You’ll become more open-minded and grateful.

          Open-minded in accepting the different cultures and lifestyles, the simple way in which people live their life’s, how friendly and happy they are makes you realise how you should be more grateful & appreciative of things you take for granted such as the little things in life we have each day. When you live in the lucky country such as Australia, and you get to travel to other countries and see how difficult it is to live day to day it really does open up your eyes and makes you think about your own life and how easy it is in comparison. We are definitely the lucky ones.

4.      You’ll hit the refresh button.

          Travelling gives you an opportunity to disconnect from your usual routine — wake up early, get ready for work or school, skip breakfast, repeat. When we can take a break from this daily routine it is a luxury! We tend to be so preoccupied in our daily lives that we sometimes forget about living our lives. Having the time away from the daily grind could be one of the best times of your life and the most rewarding. Afterwards, you’ll feel recharged, and you feel like you can work a hundred days more just because you treated yourself to that much deserved rest, unwind and a vacation. Give it a try!

5.      You’ll stimulate your mind and soul.

          It makes you smarter, and you’ll know more about yourself than you ever did. They say that you become a whole new person when travelling, and that’s the least that you can do for yourself to get to know “YOU” better. When you are away, you learn new experiences, new life skills, and you will have to solve your problems on your own but it is during this time that you can sit back, relax, and reflect deeply on the person you are now and where you want to go. You will learn not to focus on yourself and the things that worry you. But instead, you’ll look at life, people, and the places around you realising that we are after all the same in striving to survive in our day to day struggles. We all have problems that we deal with and work through and no one is immune from these, but its how you allow yourself to accept these and move on that counts. It’s a big wide world out there and its yours to explore, learn and grow from so don’t miss out on a wonderful opportunity that await you.  

As per the famous words of Mark Twain, “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.” And true enough, there might be other reasons that hold us back from travelling to places, however, you should give it a shot in booking that ticket now, and not later!
